The BC Ferries Departure Bay Terminal is to include three new one-storey building structures connected together with new enclosed walkways, and the seismic upgrade and renovation of the existing Bistro building.
The architectural intent is to create light, crisp roof planes with generous overhangs, suspended over light open vertical elements. Structural steel was chosen for the roof structures to help minimize roof depths and enhance the dramatic elegance of the large cantilevered, razor edge roof planes. The roof structure is clad with high quality BC plywood sheathing, creating smooth uninterrupted planes, and adding warmth to the modern form.
A raft foundation is used to ensure structural integrity on the highly liquefiable waterfront site.
