An elegant and innovative solution using state-of-the-art timber technology |
The gymnasium’s diagonal butterfly roof presented an interesting structural challenge. While a standard flat chord truss with eight panel points would meet the geometrical requirements, a simpler, more elegant solution was required. An innovative combination of truss and beam was chosen to enhance the dynamic form of the roof, and reduce the number of connections. The steel rod to glulam beam connections, carrying very large tensile forces, were cleanly and elegantly achieved without the use of exposed steel hardware using the German proprietary Bertsche “BVD” connector. |
