MOUNTAIN EQUIPMENT CO-OP (MEC)

Burlington - Ontario

Mountain Equipment Co-Op wanted to challenge the conventional model of suburban 'big-box' retail stores which are only designed for a useful life of 25 to 30 years. Instead, this new building was designed entirely around the principle of demountability. This 25,000 sq.ft., 2-storey retail and warehouse building was designed with a hybrid system of glued-laminated timber post-and-beam structure with a concrete and metal deck floor. Structural insulated wall panels run from foundation to roof around the building. Equilibrium Consulting Inc. designed all members and connections to be readily disassembled without jeopardizing the capacity of the members thereby improving the chances of re-using the components in the future. A document containing all as-built drawings, design assumptions, material properties and details will be kept with the building to aid future re-users of the structure. If successful, this will be the first LEED(R) project to receive an innovation credit for demountability of a building structure.
