SQUAMISH LIL'WAT CULTURAL CENTRE

Whistler - British Columbia

The Squamish Lil’Wat Cultural Centre Is a three-storey, ±38,000 square foot state-of-the-art multipurpose First Nation cultural centre. Representing coastal as well as interior native interests, the centre’s architecture incorporates modern expressions of the Coast Salish Longhouse as well as the interior “Istken”. Among other features, the facility includes a theatre, museum class exhibit spaces, a shop and a first class restaurant.

The structure consists mainly of a glue-laminated post-and-beam timber roof frame over a two-storey cast-in-place concrete structure. The roof panels were pre-fabricated, insulation in to save on erection time. The restaurant (modern “Istken”), carries a green roof, as a traditional Istken would.

A traditional Longhouse and Istken are currently under construction behind the centre, where visitors will be able to observe native sculptors making totems and other carvings firsthand.
