THE GROVE 2 IN WHISTLER

Whistler - British Columbia

Located in a stand of poplar and birch, this exclusive residence and its out-buildings (a music studio and guest house) uses the latest in CNC machining technology in the production of the many exposed roof trusses and the showpiece rotunda. Reinforced concrete at the lower levels, masonry and structural steel shear walls and wood framing are used primarily where the structure is hidden.

Exposed heavy timber scissor trusses are found repeatedly throughout the house in the great room, corridors and other living spaces. The concealed German proprietary BVD connection system was used to connect the truss bottom chord to the connecting ring to carry the high snow loads cleanly and efficiently. Powder coat finishes and architectural quality welds are found on all exposed steel elements.

Curved glue-laminated timber is used to form the ring beam of the conical rotunda roof and porch areas. BVD connectors are hidden while some hanger steel is left exposed as an expression of structure.
